A BRIEF HISTORY OF CLIA

Curriculum Leadership Institute in the Arts
Picture
—CLIA started in 1995 under the leadership of Ray Doughty, Music Educator and then Director of the Arts in Basic Curriculum Project of South Carolina.
•Ray had a visionary idea based on institutes he visited and studied throughout the country. He wanted to give arts teachers in South Carolina the opportunity to network and learn from each other in order to implement the then SC Visual and Performing Arts Framework, now the 2017 College and Career Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency.
—He designed CLIA as a three hour graduate level course that was an adventure in arts pedagogy, arts leadership and professional development.
